Job alert: Free Google IT Support Certificate at Edmonton Public Library

EPL & Google are recruiting for the 2020 Google IT Support Certificate (GISC) program at epl.ca/gisc! Applications close Jan 31, 2020!

EPL is offering the NEW Google IT Support Certificate (GISC). This 8 month training results in a qualification to work at an entry level IT helpdesk position (aka tech support), a starting point for a career in technology. Companies such as Google, Walmart, and City of Edmonton recognize this certificate as qualification for their entry level IT positions. Graduates can apply for jobs with these partners directly from the program (note: a job is not promised).

This training was designed by Google for its own employees. The program was so successful, Google made it available online via Coursera for anyone to take (for a $65/month fee). However, Google has funded EPL to offer GISC with in-person instructor support to increase the likelihood of success for participants. EPL’s second session runs March – November 2020, for FREE.

The EPL-led course includes 5 courses, with one in person class weekly to support online independent modules plus course materials, teacher instruction and support. Successful completion of the program requires a commitment of 8-10 hours per week for 8 months. Only 50 positions are available in 2020, so recruiting the right people is crucial to the success and continuation of the project.

We’ve had great interest in the program, but we’re still looking for those IDEAL candidates who would both benefit and succeed in the program. We’re reaching out to you, our community partners to identify those few individuals you know that would the perfect fit.

What IS an IDEAL candidate?
- Marginalized and Underrepresented in IT industry (Indigenous, LGTBQ+, Women, Minorities)
- Obstacles to careers and education (Newcomers, Can't Afford College, Career in Transition)
- Skills and Commitment to succeed (Fluent English, Tech Skills, Time, Motivation)
- Passionate about computers and teaching others
- Actually wants a career in IT help SPECIFICALLY

What IS NOT and ideal candidate?
- Already have successful career/education
- Desperate for ANY job/training
- Lack necessary skills or commitment to succeed
- Would rather study independently (pay or audit)

How does the public apply?
- Anyone can apply at epl.ca/gisc
- Public registration deadline Jan 31st 2020!

How do I nominate IDEAL candidates and make them stand out?
- Make sure they list you as a reference on the application form
- Optionally, write an email note to andrew.theobald@epl.ca if you really feel it's a perfect fit

For more info and background check out epl.ca/gisc (or google or coursera). Feel free to get in touch with any questions you may have, and thank you for being involved in GISC and our community!
